Job Summary

Savannah State University seeks qualified applicants for Professional Tutor. This position engages in one-to-one and group writing tutoring through the Savannah State University Writing Center (30 hours/week). Participates in other activities of the SSU Writing Center, including preparing and delivering presentations and workshops, designing supplementary materials and tutoring resources, and assisting faculty, staff, and students to further the mission of Savannah State University; assists with scheduling appointments, answering telephone, and maintaining session records. Maintains accurate and up-to-date records about tutoring appointments and activities; assists in the assessment of SSU Writing Center activities. Undertakes ongoing formal and informal professional development related to the position; performs related tasks as required; must be able to work evenings and weekends as needed. May be directed to perform job related tasks other than those specifically delineated in this description. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Minimum Qualifications

An undergraduate degree including significant coursework in English and/or Rhetoric is required; a major in English, English Education or a related field is preferred. Previous experience as a tutor; specific experience as a writing/reading tutor or related literacy activities; and strong writing, grammar, and mechanics skills as well as in a variety of citation and documentation styles including MLA, APA, and Chicago. Strong interpersonal skills, ability to relate to a diverse student body and the ability to work with students of varying skill levels is required. Should be comfortable working in a student-focused team environment that supports writing across the curriculum and accommodation for varied learning styles; background and/or credit check may be required.
